On the Air with iHeart Radio DJ Priscilla Jordan

Get to know the voices from your favorite radio stations, including their go-to workout and where they find inspiration.

When she’s not on-air at 106.1 KISS FM in Dallas, Texas native and iHeart radio DJ Priscilla Jordan is planning her next trip, hanging out at home with her son or at the gym. We asked the single mom for her go-to workout, where she finds motivation and her current goals.

Over the last few months, we’ve introduced you to a number of iHeart Radio DJs—all of whom work out at 24 Hour Fitness—to ask them about their relationship with fitness, where they find inspiration and their power food.

Meet Priscilla

24Life: What does your relationship with fitness look like?

Priscilla Jordan (PJ): Well, I’m growing my relationship with fitness, because I’ve never really worked out before, so this was all a first for me. I had that intimidation of never having been to the gym. Now, I feel like this is home. I know what I’m doing.

24Life: Do you have any current goals?

PJ: I want to have abs again, but unfortunately, my mom makes really good pumpkin muffins, and that does not do well for my goals, so I definitely want to work on those. I also want to live a healthier life so that I am more active in more areas of my life.

Some of the things that might get in my way going to the gym are the daily temptations. There’s always pizza or cookies or sweets, either at the station or at home. But I now have the willpower to pass up some of those things because they’re just not worth doing the extra burpees to work off that one cookie.

24Life: What is your go-to workout or favorite group exercise class?

PJ: My go-to workout at 24 Hour Fitness is probably the rowing machine. I don’t smell very good when I’m done, but I feel like I get a full workout. I work up a sweat—I feel like it works out every part of my body. And the club that I come to is a sport, so I have a swimming pool, and I also have access to the Zumba and yoga classes. So, instead of just doing weight training all the time, I can mix things up and add that in.

I love the Zumba classes, which it works out perfectly for me because there’s a lot of them after work around 6 o’clock. So as soon as I’m done at the office I can come straight here and do Zumba. I wore my step counter the other day, and I got in almost my daily step goal just from that one Zumba class, so that was really rewarding.

24Life: How has the gym helped you in reaching your fitness goals?

PJ: My trainer, Jimmy, he’s made a huge difference in my experience here at 24 Hour Fitness because, like I said, I came in not knowing what I was doing at all, with that intimidation of, “OK, well, I don’t know how to work any of the machines. I have this goal to have some abs again, but I don’t know how to get there.”

And so he’s been a great cheerleader for me, not only keeping me accountable to come in five days a week, but also he’ll be like, “OK, so did you eat breakfast this morning?” which was a big thing for me because I hadn’t been eating breakfast. So, I’ve now incorporated that into my daily routine. I’m eating breakfast every day now.

And he helps push me harder every day, more than I would have on my own. He’s always trying to add a little bit more weight here and there, and then I surprise myself going, “Oh, wow, OK. I can do it a little bit more, I can do another set. I can do two, four, six more reps.” So he has been a great partner for me and has helped in my progress and getting the most out of my membership.

24Life: What is your number-one stressor and how do you de-stress?

PJ: I mean, you’ve got work stress. You’ve got family stress. Things are going on with your friends and you feel like you always need to be there. There’s always something going on. And my bank account, that’s also always a stressor.

But really, a good stress reliever that I’ve found, which I didn’t think this was going to be a good stress reliever, is coming to the gym. That whole hour that I’m here, I’m focusing on, “Oh my gosh, this is so heavy. I need to get through one more rep of this.” I zone out and really get to focus on me, which just helps me deal with my stress better and be a better friend and a better coworker, because I have a chance to clear my head and focus on myself first, so that I can help everybody else.

24Life: What’s your power food?

PJ: I love chicken. There’s a really good crock-pot recipe that I’ve got. I do a lot of crock-pot stuff. It has a little bit of barbecue sauce and some soy sauce and it’s so easy. I can set that in there. That’s my go-to meal, I think.

24Life: Where do you find motivation and inspiration?

PJ: I find inspiration and motivation really in everyday life. My friends are a great inspiration. My son is inspiring to me as well and is a great cheerleader for me. So is my trainer.

And then I also have goals. I want to look good and I want to feel good about myself. So, as long as I keep coming to the gym, I know I’m going to reach those goals, and I’m going to feel good about my accomplishments that I’ve made.

24Life: Besides work, what are you passionate about?

PJ: I love to travel. My boss jokes all the time that I could be a professional vacation-taker. I like to go to new places and experience new things, which is why I think that coming to 24 Hour Fitness and reaching those goals will help me while I’m on vacation, because I like to go out and experience different cultures and meet new people. And I want to be able to have the endurance to do that all day long.

I’m also very passionate about my two non-profits. I’m on the board of directors of the U.S. Wounded Soldiers Foundation, and I’m very involved in our local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

24Life: Any advice for those thinking about joining a gym?

PJ: I was that person. I was intimidated. I was scared. I drove by here every single day, and it finally took me coming into the door. The front [desk] staff, they’re super nice. All you have to do is say, “Hey, can I just take a look around?” and they will show you. I mean, it’s not as scary as it seems. So it’s there if you need it, to have a personal trainer, to be able to learn how all the machines work and to get into the routine.
