Jorge Cruise on Staying Healthy During the Holidays

The best-selling author and celebrity fitness coach shares his advice on how to squeeze in a workout during the busy holiday season, and dealing with family pressures surrounding food.

The holidays can be a stressful and tempting time for those trying to eat healthfully and stick to their workout routine.

Celebrity fitness expert Jorge Cruise answers 24Life readers’ burning questions in order to keep their progress on track during the busy—and food-filled—holiday season.

24Life: How can I fit in working out in this crazy holiday season?

Jorge Cruise (JC): Make fitness a priority and get your workouts done. Fitness doesn’t have to be confined to the gym. Open up to the possibilities of a quick workout here and there—a yoga video at home, a bike ride to the store, a dance session with friends. Think outside the box, and use the endorphins to get you through the craziness of the holiday season.

24Life: My family is pressuring me to relax on my diet over the holidays and enjoy a little. What is a good way to stay on track, but honor my family’s traditions—fudge and all?

JC: Don’t be afraid to explain your reasoning for your healthy choices, and don’t let anyone pressure you to get off track. You are important, and your determination will be well worth it. The holidays are inherently tempting, but you are in control of your body. Make healthy choices, and practice moderation.

24Life: What rituals do you have to for New Year’s Eve?

JC: A glass of champagne is my favorite way to say cheers to the New Year with my husband, Sam. We celebrate our efforts from the prior year, and look forward to new and exciting opportunities the new year will bring. Cheers!

24Life: What is your favorite meditation or mindfulness ritual?

JC: Morning is my time for mindfulness. I call it my “me” time, where I often sit quietly with my coffee and iPad. I focus on meaningful breathing, and journal my thoughts. Taking time to re-center and revitalize your mind makes for a more productive and peaceful day. It is so important to check in with yourself and redirect your thoughts toward positivity, turn any pain into power and seize the day with purpose.
